African air in Spain: The Pyrenees welcomed us this year with lots of Sahara dust and spectacular weather!
This year we flew over the rugged limestone cliffs with a small group of passionate pilots. In the first few days there were tons of Saharan dust in the air. Despite the light-dampening particles in the atmosphere - we could only see a few kilometers ahead - the thermals were surprisingly strong and enabled us to conduct our first exploratory flights criss-crossing the valley.
The sandstorm was followed by a cleansing phase of north wind, which gave us blue skies and perfect visibility, but also a day of hiking and a lovely kayaking trip, which was certainly an adventure.
The last three days, purified by the north wind, the temperature gradient went through the roof. And with it our flights! Strong thermals, coupled with little wind, resulted in a lot of airtime and everyone got their money's worth. The reverse thermal in the evening lifted us high above the fields of Catalonia and let us ride it into the sunset.
Tapas, paella and the odd beer or glass of wine rounded off the days. Many thanks to everyone who was there!
