It is still deep winter, but soon there will be very worthwhile destinations for beautiful cross-country flights. Here is a collection of simple experiences with a length of 50 kilometers
Accurate and thorough preparation is a prerequisite for recognizing dangers and avoiding airspace violations. Here are the most important links for your flight preparation:
Small ski area on the sunny side of the Alps. Ideal for cross-country flights in winter.
DESCRIPTION The south-west slopes above Faido heat up early and provide reliable thermals. The route runs along the Leventina, either first to the south-east and then up to Airolo or vice versa. The area is a feast for the eyes and the route is easy.
BEST TIME Late Winter - Spring
DIRECTIONS By car or public transport to Faido, from there by post bus up to Cari.
TO KNOW Be aware of the pressure difference, northern locations are dangerous. Be aware of Ambri airport and be careful later in the year when the valley winds start to blow.
FANAS - PRÄTTIGAU
Very well-known flying area. If you want less hustle and bustle, head east to Stelserberg.
DESCRIPTION The Prättigau is THE place to be for ambitious XC pilots in spring. Large triangular flights are possible here very early on. That's why the small runway in Fanas is booked up well in advance. But don't worry, if you haven't planned a 200-kilometer flight, you don't have to be the first to start and can wait for the first rush and switch to later train journeys.
BEST TIME Late Winter - Spring
DIRECTIONS By car or public transport to Fanas, from there take the gondola up to Eggli.
TO KNOW Fanas is considered an area protected from foehn winds. Nevertheless, be careful and avoid flying if in doubt.
Fiesch - Wallis
High alpine, world-famous flying area and starting point for record flights. In winter also suitable for cross-country beginners
DESCRIPTION Fiesch really speaks for itself. The high alpine terrain and the west-east orientation of the valley make the area a race track. Later in the year, Fiesch is known for very strong conditions, and now in winter even beginners can have great flights.
BEST TIME Late Winter - Late Summer
DIRECTIONS By car or public transport to Fiesch, from there take the gondola up to Fiescheralp.
TO KNOW The Valais can be very challenging to fly in. For your first trips, it is best to go with experienced pilots or to find out about the weather and dangers from the local flight schools.
Flims - Surselva
Located in the west-east running Surselva, it offers relatively easy cross-country flight opportunities with many landing options.
DESCRIPTION The wide valley also offers safe routes in alpine terrain for beginners. The flight leads from Crap Sogn Gion towards Disentis. Depending on the base altitude and snow line, the flight can be extended more or less to the west here. The return journey goes to Flims, and in good conditions to Chur and further.
