Hike & Fly Wiggis

Wunderschöne Alpine Tour auf den Wiggis!

Today we wanted to climb another Glarus classic: The Wiggis!

Together with the Vorder Glärnisch, it flanks the entrance to the Klöntal and is ideal for a late summer and autumn tour. The path leads almost directly to the Wiggis. There are two ways to get to the Wiggis: from Netstal or from the Klöntal. In the text we refer to the ascent from the Klöntal.

Key Points

  • Takeoff Wiggis (2282 m)
  • Various landings in the Glarus region
  • Ascent: 5h at a good pace
  • Takeoff: (SW)-S-SE
  • Respect airspace and wildlife protection zones!

Directions

By train from Zurich to Glarus, from there by postbus to Rhodannenberg.

Ascent

To save a few meters in altitude, we choose the ascent from the Klöntal via the Wiggis. From the Rhodannenberg bus stop, we go a few meters down the road, where a path on the left leads across the meadow to the alpine road behind it. The path to Auerenalp is not signposted as a hiking trail, but is in very good condition and easy to walk. The path initially leads steeply over meadows and through forest to the path, which is not always clearly visible in the meadows, but you can't really get lost. Again through somewhat wooded and steep terrain, you reach Stögg 1270m via a few steps. At the fountain you can fill up your water bottle with wonderful spring water!

From Stögg we reach a small crossing called "Heulöchli" (T3) via Schwamm, which is easy to manage. After a few more meters of elevation we reach the Auernalp, where we can refill our water bottles at the fountain. Here we also meet the official hiking trail from Netstal. We follow the blue and white marked hiking trail steeply up to the overhanging rocks, which we follow and leave through the gate onto the summit ridge.

Takeoff

Option 1: Good starting point on the forepeak of Wiggis Pt. 2282, direction (southeast), south and southwest.

Option 2: It is possible that clouds will form in front of the Wiggis launch site due to the thermal updraft. In this case, you can only launch from the neighboring Rautispitz. Warning: The path from Wiggis to Rautispitz is exposed, but well secured. Both Rautispitz and Wiggis are on the edge of the hunting ban area. On Rautispitz, you can launch from the very eastern edge on the ridge path and then glide directly east over the rock face (get information about the edge of the hunting ban area!).

Flight

Beautiful flight to Glarus.

Landing

Mollis: Landing on the official landing site (attention airspace).

Riederen: There are large landing fields around Reidern, please choose a mown field. Do not fly too far into the valley, that is the approach path to the airfield. Be careful to fly over high-voltage power lines at a sufficient altitude.

Attention

Alpine terrain. Take enough time to read the wind correctly and take off cleanly. Bring enough food.

Conclussion

Beautiful day trip for autumn in light wind conditions.
