Hike & Fly Vilan

Zwischen Rheintal und Prättigau

The Vilan (2376 m) is the gatekeeper to the Prättigau above the Bündner Herrschaft. The majestic summit can be reached after a ride on the 'Älplibahn' and a short hike.

Directions

The journey from Zurich to Malans Älplibahn station takes around 1 hour 20 minutes by public transport or car. From there (604 m), the characteristic railway takes you up to Älpli (1786 m) from May to November. Reservation recommended: Tel. 081 322 47 76.

HIKE

The easiest route leads in a curve around Lake Orta and the points 1822 m, 1896 m, 1934 m and 1966 m and Sunntigsweid (2090 m) from the north to the summit. An easy route that partly leads through a landscape with a raised moor character and is highly recommended. Walking time approx. 2 hours. Those who prefer it steeper and more exposed can climb from the west via Mürli and the Messhaldenspitz (2175 m) (not recommended with paragliding equipment on your back).

Takeoff

Directly from the summit to the north, moderately steep meadow, rather small-scale, moderately difficult. To the south to a secondary summit (2350 m), large meadow, easy.

Flight / Landing

Lots of possibilities! For example, up the Prättigau towards Sassauna and from there further up the Prättigau or back again. Slightly rising field near the Älplibahn.

Another landing option is in the neighboring village of Jenins, medium. This external landing is recommended especially because of the immediate proximity to the guest house Alter Torkel' – local wine and culinary delight. Valley winds can be very strong in this area during the summer months.

WEATHER / AIRSPACE

As always, good weather and map studies are essential, as is a plan B in case of adverse starting conditions. The DABS is of course also part of this.

Conclussion

Beautiful summit above the Bündner Herrschaft. Landing in the wine region possible. More suitable for autumn.
