Not an insider tip, but an ideal starting point for thermal flights in autumn is the Sun Temple Saussaun (2308 m) in Prättigau.
Directions
The best way to get there is by public transport. From Zurich main station in about 1 3/4 hours and change in Landquart and Grüsch to Fanas cable car. From here take the cable car to Eggli. NOTE!: The cable car is small and seat reservations are highly recommended, Tel. 081 325 19 39.
HIKE
After leaving the last mountain inn behind at the Eggli mountain station (approx. 1700 m), the most common route leads via point 1778 on the western ridge of the Sassaunas via Schafbleis (1896 m) and Grappalazär (1923 m) up to the Ludderer Egg (2015 m). The last stretch from there to the summit is a bit rockier, but not very exposed, making the whole hike fairly easy and unproblematic. Walking time approx. 1.5 - 2 hours.
The same in white with snowshoes or skis is also highly recommended; of course, it is important to pay attention to the avalanche and snow situation.
Takeoff
Straight from the summit cross: a wonderful, generous flank towards the SW! Easy.
Flight / Takeoff
Lots of possibilities! Up the Prättigau to Klosters and from there onwards or back again. Westwards to Vilan, and so on. If there is a valley wind, it is not advisable to land at the valley station. The official landing site is at the eastern entrance to the village of Grüsch, or in the middle of the valley south of the railway line, provided the meadow has been mown.
WEATHER / AIRSPACE
As always, good weather and map studies are essential, as is a plan B in case of adverse starting conditions. The DABS is of course also part of this.
Conclussion
A fantastic starting point for thermal and cross-country flights, even in the winter months! In the summer months, the conditions are often crisp and there are strong valley winds!
