Hike & Fly Roggenstock

Small but mighty!

Seemingly inconspicuous in the Hoch Ybrig area rises the Roggenstock (1776 m). Not very dominant, but still challenging and worthwhile.

Directions

By car from Zurich it takes 50 minutes to reach the Weglosen valley station. By public transport via Wädenswil and Einsiedeln it takes 1.5 hours. The official landing site is right next to the valley station.

Ascent

On the official hiking trail from Weglosen (1036 m) via Wang and Eigen (mountain farms). Then cross over the Roggenbänder (!) to Roggenegg (1566 m) and further up on a hiking trail that is now more clearly visible to Roggenstock. Walking time approx. 2.5 hours. The Roggenbänder are partly steep and impassable, there is no official trail in this section. If you want to avoid this, you can also climb via the Seebli mountain station.

Takeoff

The summit and launch site are small, making the launch challenging. Light wind from the SE or thermals from the same direction are ideal. Without wind or in a different direction, the launch would certainly be possible, but not recommended.

Flight / Landing

Possibility to fly back to the Weglosen valley station. In thermal conditions in the summer months the landing site can be a bit more challenging, otherwise it is quite easy. The flight to Oberiberg/Unteriberg is also possible.

Weather / Airspace

As always, good weather and map studies are essential, as is a plan B in case of adverse starting conditions. The DABS is of course also part of this.

Conclussion

Small but mighty. Beautiful, varied climb. Challenging start. Weglosen is often outside of the high fog - the Roggenstock is then the perfect stopgap and sun temple.
