What were your most beautiful flights? Often it is not the longest flights that stand out in your memory. The flight from Monte Cambarogno over Lake Maggiore to the Maggia Delta is spectacular and has the potential to make it high up in your flight ranking.
Distance: 2.8 km
Ascent: 70 min
Height difference: 380 m
Difficulty: easy
When: Year round, try to avoid the strong conditions in late spring and mid-summer in the early afternoon.
Wind direction: Light winds, SE-SW
Easily doable with public transport. Alternatively, drive to the car park in front of Camping Delta in Locarno and park the car there. Then continue with public transport, bus 3 to Debarcadero Locarno, take the boat to Magadino, and from there take bus 352 to Alpe di Neggia.
From the Alpe di Neggia stop, either go directly (walk a little towards Indemini, then up the meadow on the right towards the electricity pylons) or go anti-clockwise on the hiking trail north around the mountain up to Monte Gambarogno. From there, descend to the starting point to the north. Walking time is just over an hour with normal equipment and without being a H&F professional.
After takeoff, turn directly towards the Maggia Delta (approx. 330°). Fly windward, if necessary, keep a considerable lead. You will soon be at a fantastic altitude above the lake and soon above the landing site.
If you want to land at the Maggia Delta and are not very experienced with landings, you will need to inspect the landing site. The space is limited depending on the water level. The Delta Maggia landing site can only be used during the camping season from March to October and when the water level is normal to low. Landing site altitude 194 m above sea level.
Alternative landing site: Former Ascona airport. An active flying style is required during landing. The wind is usually at 90° to the runway axis, and houses and trees create lee turbulence.
The landing options on the southeast side of Lake Maggiore are limited!
This flight only works if the TMA Locarno is not active. Check the status by phone or radio on site shortly before take-off. Follow the non-binding Facebook page "TMA Locarno", which will help you plan your flight.

Check the wind forecast: If there is a strong SE wind across the region, the launch site will be in the lee. If there is a strong southerly wind and a strong valley wind at the same time, the flight may not be appropriate, depending on the type of glider. These are also conditions in which you would no longer fly from the Cimetta.
Do not fly when the north foehn wind blows!
An easy hike with a breathtaking flight!
