Hike & Fly Hummel

By car from Zurich (towards Einsiedeln, Hoch Ybrig) within 40 minutes to Gross (SZ) Schützennhaus, directly on the main road. Plenty of parking spaces available. By public transport approx. 1 hour to Gross Ebenau, then on foot into the valley (15 minutes). 

HIKE

Short hike. From the Schützenhaus, follow the main road into the valley and after about 150 m turn right (over the landing field) onto the pasture path up the slope. Two cattle gates must be passed, then about 300 m on a meadow path that is not always clearly visible straight up the slope to the edge of the forest. From there, the path is well marked. Pass the lower take-off point and back into the forest. Via point 1178 and Unterhummel up to the upper take-off point (at about 1360 m), windsock and information board available.

ASCENT

Hiking time about 1 hour, easy. About 20 minutes to the lower starting point.

TAKEOFF

You start directly on the ridge in a northerly direction. Easy starting point. From the lower starting point head in a north-easterly direction (if the breeze is good). Please note the information board on site.

FLIGHT AND LANDING

Soaring in a northerly wind and valley wind. In favorable conditions along the shore of Lake Sihl. In thermal conditions there are many opportunities to fly away and connect. The official landing site is right next to the starting point at Schützenhaus. Rather small and close to the road. Cash box (CHF 2.-) by the football field fence. Pay attention to the information board on site.

WEATHER / AIRSPACE 

Very reliable in a bise; often still flyable when it is already too strong on the Üetliberg. Be careful on thermal days, the bise is then further strengthened by the valley wind. Watch the wind and water movement on the lake, fly around lee and venturi traps. DABS as always.

CONCLUSION

Everyone can climb the Hummel. A reliable hill near Lake Sihl. Although not an insider tip, it is always beautiful, even in winter. Have a nice flight!
