Hike & Fly Hohgant

Steeply earned panorama

The fantastic panorama from the summit of the Hohgant (2197 m above sea level) is well deserved; the climb is steep and quite difficult with the paraglider on your back. The flight into the valley is twice as enjoyable.

Directions

Located in the furthest corner of the Emmental (BE), you have to drive through the Entlebuch (LU). From Zurich it is a good 1 1/2 hours to Bumbach, the starting point of our tour. In Bumbach, cross the bridge towards the campsite. Parking is available at the edge of the forest.

Ascent

One possible route leads relatively directly uphill from Bumbach. This is not the easiest route and requires a good stride and a head for heights. From Bumbach, the mountain hiking trail is well marked and leads towards Hohgant/Furggengütsch to Luterschwändiegg (approx. 1450 m above sea level). From this junction, the trail leads cross-country along a ridge, is not clearly marked and has not been maintained for some time. After this ridge, the trail changes to the south side and is easier to see again. Follow the trail to the summit and enjoy the well-earned view. The climb takes 3-4 hours, partly steep and exposed.

Flight

Take-off point: From the summit to the S/SW/W. Karst rock formations make it difficult to deploy the paraglider everywhere. If you take off in a southerly direction, you must fly over the ridge immediately after take-off in order to be able to land in Bumbach. Therefore, do not worry about altitude after take-off and be aware of a possible leeward situation. In all directions, take-off is only recommended in light winds.

Landing

There are many possibilities. Apart from a high-voltage power line, there are no significant obstacles to mention. We ended up right at the campsite, not far from the parked car.

Weather / Airspace

“The crown of the Emmental” lies in the foothills of the Alps between the main ridge of the Alps and the Mittelland. As always when flying, good weather preparation is essential. As always, check out the DABS.

Conclussion

A nice, tough tour for advanced riders. Only start when the wind is light!
