Between Uri and Nidwalden lies the Chaiserstuel (2400 m). You can take off in any direction. If you fly all the way down into the Engelberg valley, the difference in altitude is very impressive at almost 2000 m.
Directions
The valley station of the Bannalp-Chrüzhütte cable car in Oberrickenbach (NW) can be reached by car from Lucerne in around 30 minutes, or from Zurich in 1 hour. By public transport it takes 45 minutes or just under 2 hours.
Ascent
From the Chrüzhütte (1713 m above sea level) you follow the well-marked paths to the Chaiserstuel. The difference in altitude is 700m. Experienced hikers should be able to manage the walk in 2 hours.
Alternatively, you can take a very small train from Oberrickenbach in 2 sections to the Sinsgäu (1612 m above sea level). This is a good option when the Bannalp train is being overhauled. From there, the equally good path leads to the summit in 2 1/2 hours. (The second route, the route from Sinsgäu, can be seen in the picture gallery)
Takeoff / Flight
From the Chaiserstuel you can take off in any direction, but the best direction is west. Directly from the summit plateau if the wind is blowing at a pleasant strength. Without wind, the take-off meadow may be a bit short. If there is too much wind, you don't want to be boxed sideways off the plateau. Alternatively, you can take off very safely from several meadows around the summit.
Landing
If you have come to Oberrickenbach by car and want to land there, you should take a good look at the landing site. There are many large meadows. However, there are even more railway, hay and other cables. Make sure you take a good look at the landing site! We definitely recommend flying to the Engelberg Valley. There you can land easily on one of the many official landing sites in Dallenwil, Wolfenschiessen or Grafenort.
WEATHER / AIRSPACE
With its 2400m altitude and location, the Chaiserstuel is clearly an alpine flying area. The summit is relatively exposed, so the winds at high altitudes cannot be too strong. As always, check out the DABS.
Conclussion
Beautiful tour with a lot of altitude difference during the flight. Also suitable for beginners.
